Overview

A highly venomous spider found in southern Europe and Africa. Identifiable by its black body and red markings.

Health risks

Venom causes severe pain, muscle cramps, nausea and in rare cases death. Seek medical attention immediately if bitten.

Signs of infestation

• ✓Black spider with red or orange markings
• ✓Irregular messy web near ground level
• ✓Found in dark dry sheltered areas
• ✓Egg sacs wrapped in silk

Prevention

• ✓Wear gloves when working outdoors or in storage areas
• ✓Shake shoes and clothing before wearing
• ✓Seal gaps in walls and around windows
• ✓Remove wood piles and debris near the building
