Overview

A small beetle whose larvae feed on natural fibres, causing damage to carpets, clothing, and upholstery.

Health risks

Not harmful to humans directly but larvae cause significant damage to natural fibre goods. Larval hairs can cause skin irritation.

Signs of infestation

• ✓Irregular holes in carpets, clothing or upholstery
• ✓Shed larval skins near damaged items
• ✓Small oval beetles near windows
• ✓Bare patches in wool carpets

Prevention

• ✓Vacuum regularly under furniture and along skirting boards
• ✓Store woolens in sealed bags
• ✓Check second-hand clothing before bringing home
• ✓Keep birds nests away from roof spaces
